I played around a bit with the white balance, first trying the "Cloudy" setting on my Nikon. What's a storm if not cloudy, right? I also tilted the camera up to capture as much of that cloudiness as possible.

I kind of liked the results, but the combination of the white balance and enough incandescent city lights in the area made it a bit warmer colored than I liked.
So I changed the white balance setting to "Incandescent" and came up with a bluer color that I like much better and nice big lightning bolt right in the middle of the frame.

Once I felt the storm was getting too close I packed up my stuff and made it inside just before the rains came pouring down. I also want to say howdy to the Kansas photographer I met as I was packing up - hope those new lenses are working well for you on your trip to South Dakota.
