The Northern Lights effect is created by clouds that drifted through the scene being illuminated by a half moon that is behind the middle rock spire.

These types of shots lend themselves well to experimenting in Photoshop, adding colors, etc. This version is a lot closer to the natural colors in the scene, but who's to say what's "right" in a photo like this. Exposure time on this one was 10 minutes, so the star trails are longer.
