Have to admit Wyoming has some great scenery too

In the spirit of the Ken Burns/PBS TV series on the national parks that is getting a lot of attention, I spent most of this week in Devils Tower, Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks in Wyoming. A bit of different scenery can be inspiring.

First stop was Devils Tower. I guess I don't have to explain to most photographers why I left a perfectly good motel room in Spearfish at 11:30 pm, drove in the dark to Devils Tower to shoot this picture, then continued on to Gillette where I caught a couple hours sleep in the Walmart parking lot next to a '91 Crown Victoria that "Runs Good!"

If you're wondering what prompted me to shoot star trails over Devils Tower at midnight, check out the Steven Speilberg movie classic from 1977, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." You'll love it, I promise.

From there it was on to the Tetons and snowy/cloudy weather that had already forced many of the fall leaves to drop.

I did manage to catch one sunny day, including blue sky to contrast the famous Old Faithful geyser with.

My favorite shot of the week is of the Cunningham Cabin with alpenglow lighting the predawn sky above the Tetons. Standing in the frigid cold listening to coyotes howling in the distance while waiting for sunrise was a memorable experience.

The Cunningham Cabin was the site of an actual Old West shootout where two suspected horse thieves were killed by a posse of questionable authority. It is now on the National Register of Historic Places and part of Grand Teton National Park.

After a 13-hour drive home yesterday, I can say that was a fun trip, but it's good to be back in South Dakota.

Don't forget that if you are reading this on Facebook, you're missing all the good stuff over at www.dakotagraph.com.
