Black Hills Photo Shootout pre-scout

I did a little pre-scouting today for this weekend's Black Hills Photo Shootout, visiting both Meeker Ranch and Spokane ghost town.

Meeker Ranch is very near the town of Custer and is in great shape, thanks to preservation groups who recently put a new roof on the ranch house. Wood shakes blend very well with the old buildings and don't look overly new. I quickly threw together this HDR shot from the stables. Boy, do I have a lot to learn about HDR.

Spokane is on the northern edge of Custer State Park and easy to find with the right directions. Along with many old buildings, some rusting car bodies make fun shots like the "Spokane Beast."

Looks like the weather is going to cooperate for the Shootout and we've got some fall leaves turning, so it's going to be beautiful.
