So imagine my surprise when I came over a hill and saw spread before me a scene right out of the movie. One of the largest herds of buffalo I've seen was grazing in a beautiful valley. It was Ted Turner's Bad River Ranch herd in all their summer glory. Be sure to click on the photo to view it in a larger size.
I stuck around the area long enough to get some incredible sunset silhouettes as huge clouds built into the heavens.
It was a beautiful night to stumble across some great subject matter. Sometimes it just takes the right music!

Yes it is a gravel road. You can drive all the way from Fort Pierre to Midland, which takes you through the ghost town of Capa - http://www.dakotagraph.com/search/label/Capa. The only resident of Capa is an older gentleman named Phil who loves visitors. (At least I hope he's still there. I met him two years ago.)
You may come to some rutted roads on the west end of the route, so a higher-clearance vehicle would be a good thing.

Also, those buffalo have a large area to roam in, so there's no guarantee you'll find them next to the road.
Thanks for the info Chad! Both our vehicles are 4WD so that shouldnt be an issue. We love driving the back roads... and the ghost town is a plus! Will check it out on your page. I figured it was hit or miss on the buffalo but worth a try.
