Dillinger's Sioux Falls heist

Like many people, the 2009 movie "Public Enemies" sparked an interest in John Dillinger and other gangsters of the Depression era for me. This week I visited the site of Dillinger's only South Dakota heist, the former Security National Bank at the corner of South Main and West Ninth streets in downtown Sioux Falls.

Dillinger, Lester "Baby Face" Nelson and their gang robbed the bank on March 6, 1934, shooting one Sioux Falls policeman and getting away with around $49,000. For the filming of "Public Enemies," Oshkosh, Wisconsin filled in for Sioux Falls.

The building today is designated with an historic marker and what many believe to be a bullet hole in the stone facade.
