Raptor Alley is great, but no snowy owl

Thursday was another successful winter trip on South Dakota Highway 34 between Sturgis and Fort Pierre that I have designated as Raptor Alley.

Bird count in 175 miles was 12 bald eagles, 15 hawks and two vultures. However, I'm still searching for the snowy owls that all my photographer friends seem to be finding.

Great eagle shots! I saw my first snowy owl today clinging to a highway sign just east of the Hwy 45 exit (289, my map says) on I-90. Unfortunately, I was just getting onto the interstate and driving into the sun, so did not get a long glimpse. Keep at it, Chad; they're out there!

Thanks for the encouragement Jane. Even if I don't find one, I've been enjoying a lot of pictures of them this year.

That's an awesome count! Just off of I90 exit 17 I saw 4 bald eagles on Tuesday then this morning I saw a golden eagle in the same spot. Inspiring!
