Oahe Dam near Pierre was completed 50 years ago and a big celebration is planned, including a cool photo opportunity with fireworks over the dam.
Activities will be held at the dam, the marina below it and in Pierre and Fort Pierre throughout August 17 and 18. Music, tours of the Oahe Chapel and the dam's powerhouse, exhibits and receptions at the Cultural Heritage Center, viewings of a film on the construction at the State 123 Theater, book sales and more are planned.
For photographers probably the best part of the weekend will be fireworks over the dam's powerhouse surge tubes on Friday, Aug. 17 shortly after dark. Here is a satellite image from Google Earth explaining where to expect the fireworks and my suggestion for camera location. It will most likely take a medium-sized telephoto to capture a good shot.
